The White Man’s Burden: Why the West’s Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good by William Easterly
in conjunction with
The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time by Jeffery Sachs
These books try to explain the complicated task of solving world poverty through two different perspectives: “bottom, up” and “top, down” (respectively).
In their attempt to make this massive challenge seem conquerable they (necessarily) simplify the issue. Between the two books you begin to understand how each one is flawed yet functional in its own way. Each books on its own leaves you feeling excited and empowered, but directionless. Together they give a full picture of the daunting challenge and tools to make educated decisions about how to help without stroking you ego like buying organic candy from the other side of the globe.
